In response to the changing economic environment, PT Parna Raya has been aggressively pursuing new investments and creating affiliated companies to develop new businesses and diversify into specialized areas. Realizing that the ammonia market is steadily growing, while the domestic supply is limited, PT Parna Raya decided to set up a business in the pertochemical industry to produce ammonia. This ammonia plant in the Kaltim Industrial Estate in Bontang, East Kalimantan, was officiated on 4th July 2002, after a successful commercial production trial prior to commencement. As it improves, on 27 May 2013, KPI became a domestic private company as major shares transferred from Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), Asahi Chemical (Japan), and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) to PT Parna Raya and becomes holder of 90% shares.
Designed by Haider Topsoe technology - used by most of ammonia plants around the world and constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry - the plant equipped with a good waste water management. KPI, eficiently run by 180 peoples in an area approximately 6,000 square meters, produces 1,500 tons anhydrous ammonia (99.5% ammonia) daily or approximately 495,000 tons yearly. Eighty percent of the production is exported to Australia, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Phillipines. It is also marketed domestically, with PT Petrokimia Gresik among its regular customers.
KPI was also the first company in indonesia to introduce Closed Sea Cooling Tower. This system prevents the sea water temperature to increase by circulating most of the sea cooled water, instead of dumping the hot water into the sea. We aspire to secure a receiving tank in East Java, a promising market for our ammonia product, as most MSG plants (one of potential user of ammonia) are located in East Java. We are also finding ways the excess material from the production process. Our Objective is be the most competitive ammonia plant in the world.
