In response to the changing economic environment, PT Parna Raya has been aggressively pursuing new investments and creating affiliated companies to develop new business and diversify into specialized area. Realizing that the ammonia market is steadily growing, while the domestic supply is limited, PT Parna Raya decided to set up a business in petrochemical industry to produce ammonia.
An ammonia plant was built in Kaltim Industrial Estate in Bontang, East Borneo. The plant was constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and equipped with an excellent waste-water management using Haldor Topsoe technology. Presently the plant runs effectively by less than 200 personnel.
The Company known as PT Kaltim Prima Industri (KPI) officiated on 4th July 2002, after a successful commercial production trial prior to commencement. As it improves on 27th May 2013, KPI became a domestic private company following major shares transferred from Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), Asahi Chemical (Japan) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (Japan) to PT Parna Raya, presently holder of 90% shares.
